Inauguration as Entertainment
President's Day

Rick Warren
Aretha Franklin
Isaak Perlman
Yoyo Ma

I'm watching the inauguration, because well, I can. I didn't expect to be treated with such amazing personalities to compliment our elected officials.

Simple Gifts is one of my favorite hymns. Courtesy of Wikipedia, here are the lyrics:

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come round right.

And now, he's our new president. May God bless and guide him and all of our leaders.

I thought Warren gave an excellent (tho long) prayer

Heh. Not surprising, for such a momentous occasion.

My prayers range from "Thank you Jesus for all our good friends and this yummy snack" with the twos at church, to rambly pillow talk at bedtime. Sometimes there's just a lot to say. :)

I found it to be terribly UN-entertaining. Did Aretha have a couple of strokes I never heard about? That was fit for the embarrassing-audition part of American Idol.

Yes, it is a Shaker hymn, and it was featured in the American Suite by Copeland.

If you follow the link to Wiki, it gives a history of the song, as well as charted notes for the tune.
