Minikin's Journal

Routine Ramblings of an Occasionally Interesting Housewife

Transcription: Rewind
Mom was right. I'm getting faster as I get used to the process. And I decided to do the entry in Word, to keep track of my time. 168 minutes to transcribe a little over 38 minutes of sound. That's 6,311 words, so far. That's compared to 10,842 in the final word count for ReAct, which was 59:48 running time. Rewind is 1:04:36, but it's going faster. At the beginning of ReAct, I was estimating that I was taking 10 minutes to type a minute of sound. Ugh.

Ah well, time for bed.

Are you using a transcription system with a foot pedal?

Hee hee.

Nope, just listening to the podcast (which matches the DVD for the sermon portion), and typing. The series is The Revolution, and the individual sermons are : Re:Discover, Re:Fuse, Re:Wind, Re:Veal, Re:Quire and Re:Act.

Oh, good grief! Get yourself some trascription software and you could whip this stuff out in way less time! It's really not expensive.

My dad let me try his copy of Dragon Naturally Speaking, which meant using Mom's laptop, on its Windows partition, but I couldn't get it to accept WAV files. Considering the other time constraints, my time is better used getting the letters on the screen than futzing around getting software to work.

I've looked for voice recognition software for the Mac; maybe $200 will be not really expensive next year, but it's over my budget this year.

There also appear to be some substantial limitations to using voice recognition software for transcription.

As far as using voice transcription tools, it might speed this up a bit, but then so is just getting more practice at it. Considering that I'm typing in my lap with my feet up in my easy chair, I'd have to say I prefer ⌘-tab space-bar over a foot pedal for stopping and starting the recording. I'm not proficient enough at this to type AS I'm listening yet, but I can use i-Tunes to slow down playback when I decide to try it.
