bundled up, walkabout, snow

Flar's home, yay!

Mixed bag of a day.

Momma cat was back, but only in the morning. She's a working mom with six latch-key babes. Tigger and I petted them all yesterday; we'll see if Momma cat decided to move them in the night.

Momma cat hasn't touched the kibble I bought her, but I had it on top of the shelves. So I've set it on the floor by the kittens to see if she partakes.

Yesterday was errand day:
  • TLS dropoff
  • Kroger
  • quick turn-around at home
  • Airport pickup - two hours early
  • lunch
  • Sam's Club
  • Allergist
  • Bank
  • TLS pickup - with Slackerboy along for the ride
  • quick turn-around dinner
  • Band concert at school - Critter had a trumpet solo!

I fed the dogs so Critter could get straight to his homework. Tigger orbitted between Daddy and homework. Flar and I had words about when to talk to Tigger about school. He wanted to wait, because he was tired. I (theoretically) work tonight and tomorrow, so that would have meant telling him on Friday, and then me leaving town. No. I *really* didn't want to do that. But, Flar was fading fast, just talking about this, so I told him to nap, NOW. (this was at 7)

When Tigger came down at 8:30 from doing homework, he and I went in to wake Flar, who had just gotten up. Ah! Pounce denied... We sat down on the bed and in the recliner, and Flar told Tigger, with some additions from me. How do you tell a child something they don't want to hear, and give as the reason something they know to be patently false? How do you tell a 10 year old that Mommy and Daddy can't fix it, we've tried, they won't let us. He cried. He tried asking the questions we'd already asked. He cried. Then he announced that he didn't want to talk about it anymore.

So now he knows, and when he has to interview with Sayre it won't be a bolt from the blue.

My bath was cold again. I let in too much water. Argh.

Wolf called from the car, on-time for phone call versus interrupted by getting home and settling Roo in bed. Then phone call was short. I'm no fun to talk to when I'm down about serious stuff. :(

Feeling discontent, discouraged, disconnected.

Today is supposed to be productivity day:
  • Laundry
  • Quicken reporting
  • Finish Catch-Up list
  • Work tonight

I haven't gotten an auspicious start. Barely crawled out of bed by 7, and spent the next hour and a half reading LJ instead of sorting dirty clothes.

So totally not ready for the weekend.

on being useful

Feeling kind of blah today. Would respond positively to unsolicited acts of kindness, but wait, that's a solicitation. Sigh.

Let's see... Dishes are clean; mail is opened; quicken is up-to-date with a report printed; I'm caught up on the paper - didn't try the crossword today, given how hard it was yesterday; I caught up on coupons yesterday before I shopped; the kitchen table is still a bit messy, but down to a dull roar -- need to figure out a permanent home for the pictures frames that chess club gave me; I've started four loads of laundry so far - hung out two, have one ready to sort; I haven't cleaned the toilets - maybe I should think of that as a bi-weekly event. So I guess I got caught up this morning.

I also fixed the casserole that I wanted to have for dinner last night. It's ready to pop in the oven when I get home with the boys, and I can bring a serving to work. Assuming Opman doesn't call and ask me not to come in. And I made a smoothie to drink with my leftovers for lunch. Mmmmmm .. strawberry-banana-nilla yogurt-lemonade goodness. Flar wasn't impressed. It was a perfect foil for the spicy Zatarain's, though.

Flar's printer ran out of ink while he was printing a letter to TLS, so I'm leaving the house early this afternoon. I've got three ink cartridges to trade in for paper, when I stop by to buy one new one.

I guess that's it for my morning. I've got time for a shower before I head out.

Time to breathe

No work tonight; Opman called and we've settled on a regular Mon, Thur two-day work schedule for the foreseeable future. I didn't mention that today is my one-year anniversary. I'll leave a note asking about a review when I'm at work, unless he actually brings it up himself.

Beef Macaroni Italiano for dinner tonight. It's a casserole made with stew meat, macaroni, and a tomato sauce that has wine and onion soup mix in it. I'd used the last packet of onion soup to make dip during the sleepover, so I made creamy Beef Macaroni Italiano tonight. I figure adding sour cream to the recipe is a valid one-time experiment, and who knows? We may like it better this way.

Tigger and I played with the kittens when we got home from school. I brought out a laundry basket and towel to put them in while we held them one at a time. Tigger put the towel back in their nesting spot when we returned them, so they've have a softer place to be. They feel pretty healthy, so Mamacat must be giving them enough milk.

We decided that even temporary guests need names: Popeye has one eye shut. The other two tabbys are Tiger and Gandalf (before he turned white ;). There are two grey and white kittens. Goliath is noticeable larger than the rest; we named the smaller one Mr. Spots. The last kitten is a powder grey with darker ears and tails; she looks like she could be a seal-point siamese. I named her China Girl. All sexes completely arbitrary, though. They are letting us handle them, but they're still too little to tell between females and males at this point. Details is coming over tomorrow at 4; she has more experience with kittens, so maybe she'll be able to tell.

Since I've moved the food to the floor, Mamacat (presumably) has been eating it. Else, we're succeeding in bribing some other animal not to eat the kitties. Whatever.

We may end up trapping Mamacat in order to get her to the vet to be spayed. That'll be an adventure.

The paint foreman started to take apart the front door this afternoon, but the contractor came by and had him put it back, because there wasn't going to be time to install the door today. Ah well. I hope this means they'll be installing it tomorrow. Yay! New front door.

I dropped by Office Max on the way to school, to turn in used ink cartridges for paper, and buy new ink. They only give one ream a day, but he let me keep my extra cartridges for another time.

I watered the straw and changed the water in the wading pool. Since I'm not working tonight, I'll have time to fold the rest of the laundry - towels, a sweater and a blanket.

Tonight, I think I'll tackle the PWP reporting pages. And, if I'm feeling all sparkly-witted, I'll take another look at Applescript and MacPerl.

Unless Flar comes up with other ways to fill my unexpected free time.

He came up with something

Sour cream did not, in fact, ruin the dinner. It didn't ameliorate the spiciness, either.

As we were eating, all around the same table no less, Critter asked about watching a movie (thinking satellite) and Flar suggested going to a dollar movie. Tigger then asked to see Home on the Range. It's still in the regular theatre, but Flar is feeling less stressed about money so he decided to treat us all.

It was a very fun, very silly movie.

We're back home, and the kids have gone to bed. Flar is talking to Gaucha, and I'm kicking back for some time online.
