Name Survey

From roina_arwen ( who got it from spydielives, who got it from caritas_skunk, who got it from littledevi:

  1. What does your first name mean?
    Bee.
  2. What does your middle name mean?
    Small Falcon.
  3. What does your last name mean?
    • Maiden
      Willow Grove
My mother's maiden name means "son of the beloved of God."
    • Married
I couldn't find a meaning for my husband's surname, but his Scottish clan name means "son of black stranger".
  4. So what does your name mean when put together?
Bee. Small falcon. Willow Grove. Son of Black Stranger.
Industrious, sharp-eyed recluse of mysterious origin.
  5. Do you have a nickname?
Not really. There are tons of variants on my first name. A very few people have pet names for me that aren't based on my first name.
  6. What would you have been named if you were the opposite gender?
My parents were completely unprepared for that possibility. I have an older brother. Since they already had a boy, they fully expected to have a girl. My middle name is derived from my maternal grandfather's, so that would probably remain the same, with some reasonably short boy-name tacked on the front.
  7. Any other name oddities?
I've only met one other female with my middle name. She was born in the same hospital as I, almost exactly one year earlier. Her first name was a boy-name too, not just her middle name.

Threat of rain

The skies are overcast, and there's rain in the forecast. That's the only explanation I can give for why I've already been outside today.

I've scattered half the grass seed (or maybe less: grass seed goes a long way) and two bales of hay about the back yard. Hay goes further than I'd expected, as well. I let the dogs out into the yard when I was done, they seemed curious about the hay. Dizzy rolled in it. It looked like Flood didn't necessarily like the way it felt to walk on it. It seemed to confuse her, as to where she was supposed to pee.

So, did I mention I'm mildly allergic to hay? I have interesting red dots on my arms now. But I don't itch anymore -- I came in and took a shower. And now that I've looked at the time, I realize I can go out and do the flower gardens, too, weather permitting.

I'm glad I put this off until today. It's so much more fun to work outside on a cloudy day. ;)

In before the rain came down

That took less time than I'd expected. I hoed and raked and sowed and mulched. I wish I'd bought more flower seeds, but we'll see what comes up.

I forgot about the fertilizer that we bought for the grass seed. Oops. I brought the dogs in, and spread the fertilizer over the hay. With any luck we'll get a nice wetting rain, and the fertilizer will drip through the hay onto the grass seed.

Now to see about my inside list. It's weird to have so much done already.

Friday Five

I admit it, I'm stocking up on online time today, because where I'm going, I'll have to use *gasp* dial-up access.

From sydb42, who got it from barefoot_dyke:

  1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
    I'm a navy brat. Lemme see: 14.
Keywest, three locations in DC suburbs, Monterey, Houston, Iceland: off-base and on, two houses in Foster City, two houses in Sugar Land and a condo in Houston, then here. Do I count college dorms and living with my in-laws when I first moved to Kentucky? Then it would be 18.
  2. Which was your favorite and why?
Where I live now. All the rooms are huge, and there are plenty of them. We have a jacuzzi tub and separate shower in our master bathroom, and a giant jacuzzi for entertaining. Dating back to when I was addicted to TV, we have some 14 coaxial outlets for TVs, all connected to a wiring closet in the center of the house.
I have my own little space I can lock myself away in, and we built a water garden at the back door. I spotted two frogs in the water this morning -- it's clear enough to see them. :)
  3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
I used to find it exciting, when the Navy paid for movers to do all the work. The itmes that Flar and I have moved, we've had to do all the packing, so that puts a big damper on the excitement thing.
Oh, and just to make life more interesting, we're still remodelling this house, so we get to repeat the packing monster every time we tackle a new room. The next one is the library. Some day.
  4. What's more important, location or price?
Location. I love living in Kentucky. Even if I do have allergies. So there.
  5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
I liked Sydb's response to this -- maid quarters with live-in maid. Our dream house is this one, with the remodelling done, and a few things tidied up around the edges. There'd be an organized filing system, the sewing room would have a storage system with supplies organized by craft. We've already got the two jacuzzis I mentioned, and a large kitchen and pantry. We'd get a plasma TV and hang it on the wall, and return the TV we're borrowing from Knight, that's sitting on the console TV that's broken. And we want to build an outdoor pool and deck, and the pool would have a hot tub and waterfall, and maybe even a slide.

User Info

I updated my user info. I went in there to enable text messaging, and then decided to write a little in my bio.

Anyway, while I'm driving (once I leave the immediate area tomorrow morning), I'm going to be minimizing the amount that I use my cel phone. But I've got a generous number of text messages in my current plan, so feel free to send me text messages while I'm gone.

Back to cooking. I'm not going to be in a rush to fix dinner tonight. :)

Afternoon update

I've run out of stuff to do that isn't "pack for the trip." Which means I'm officially in the stage where I go nuts before a trip, trying to figure out what I want to bring, and thinking up last minute things I want to do around the house before leaving it.

Huzzah!

The car is packed. The cold food for the cooler is on one shelf of the fridge, and we'll pack drinks as they fit.

And I'm only 14 minutes past my preferred bedtime tonight.

I'm planning on checking email and live journal in the morning. Night all.

okay, I just couldn't resist

Mostly, cause I have a guiltier pleasure!

1. Do you like to sing? Why or why not? Yes, I like the sound of my voice. Oh, so vain.

2. Where do you like to sing? Why?Alone in the car, because I don't have to worry about volume, and the shower, because my voice echoes back to me so well.

3. Do you sing in front of people? Why or why not? Yes. Because I love to sing.

4. What's your favorite song to sing along with? Why? I sing along to show tunes. They're generally more lyrical.

5. What song is your guilty singing pleasure? Why? The Partridge Family: I Think I Love You! or maybe, Cuddle Up as performed by The Captain and Tennille.

Now, really. Ni Ni.
