Money stress

That was very unpleasant.

We've been pretty good about dancing around each other the past few times we've done this, but tonight it became apparent that Flar didn't have a complete understanding of the current state of our checking account, and rather than sit down and figure out where to go from here, we had to go through a very messy how did we get here from there.

Flar does not listen to me when he tells me to explains something to him. And I can't stand being interrupted when I've just been given a clear request for information. Partly because it throws me off-track on what I'm trying to say, and partly because each interruption has a high likelihood of shearing the discussion down another misunderstanding blind alley, that would have been avoided by listening to the next bit. Argh.

I made a mistake in the numbers last week that didn't fool me one bit into complacency, but seemed to soothe Flar. And started to make the same mistake this week. I figured out the problem quickly enough, but couldn't adequately explain it to Flar.

My explanations all failed. It came down to clicking and pointing in the Checks to Pay window of Quicken. Clicking on checks to pay doesn't affect the check book balance, because the balance reflects all entries as of the date they enter the register. Even checks that haven't been printed yet. At some point, Flar finally said "but the balance didn't change." And then he got it. Sigh.

I hate being behind in paying bills. I hate having to go through strange calculations to figure out the actual checking balance at any particular time. I hate having to explain it all to Flar, when he's just bullishly saying that the numbers don't make sense compared to last week.

If anybody reading this is praying, pray that Flar's clients will pay their bills, and that Flar will sign new contracts soon. IF he gets clients to pay outstanding accounts receivable, he's got enough signed work to get us through July. But one of the outstanding accounts is $18K. And that would just make life bearable again.

People always say at this point: "I need a vacation." I'm getting a vacation. But I don't know how much I'll be able to enjoy it, worrying about all of this. What I need is to dissolve into tears and drift in a hot bath until I can sleep without the worry. What I get to do is stuf bills envelopes, pack up errands bags for tomorrow, and leave the house 1.5 hours early tomorrow, to watch a friends' kid in a school play.

I'm pretty sure I'd be this messed up even if it weren't the first day of my period. Well, pretty sure.

Afternoon update

Oh my gosh, you haven't lived until you've seen third graders perform Hamlet. It's Shakepeare on speed: they reduced the play to twelve scenes, no mention of acts, and were done in about 50 minutes. T was cute as Laertes. I'm embarrassed to say I'd forgotten who Laertes was until I saw the play this morning: Ophelia's brother.

I started out bowling well, but then I went downhill. I bowled 149, 130 & 113. We took the second game, but that was it.

knightaudit & disheveledhair are on their way to Orlando now. Knight thinks we may meet up for lunch on their way back, our way there. I'm supposed to call my relatives who live outside Macon when we've got an estimate on our arrival, and they'll drive to our hotel to meet us. Heck, we might get free lunch and dinner out of the deal. ;)

Mom was going to buy tickets to Islands of Adventure at her AAA, but there's some regional nonsense, and her AAA doesn't sell those tickets. So she called my AAA and did a phone order. I picked up the tickets after bowling. Since I was already downtown, I stopped at the Post Rider station to drop off bills and buy postage. There was a bit of a line, but I spent much of it on the phone with my mom. No one glared at me, and I was off the phone before I needed to talk to the woman at the counter.

I got a call from Bébé while I was bowling. It seems that the optician persists in calling him, because he and Barbar originally bought the glasses for Tigger as a Christmas present. Anyway, the temple piece is in, so I've got to bring Tigger by to have them put it on and adjust it.

I'm going to plan out the rest of the week's food, sticking a few "leftovers" dishes into the mix, so we leave Flar with easy eating. The grocery list should be short today.

I decided to strip the bed and wash the sheets before the rest of the laundry, so we can have fresh sheets (without changing the comforter). So the laundry is already running, and I'll probably have most of it washed tonight. I need to pick through the hand-wash basket, to figure out I want to bring on vacation.

And convalescing darkwolf69 just talked me into a game of Scrabble, including sysdb42.

Evening Check-In

Tigger didn't know where his glasses were (he wore his backup glasses to school today), so we didn't go to the optician. They were in my car. Sigh.

I made a menu plan for the week:

  • Tuesday: Fish fillets
  • Wednesday: Sweet & Sour Ham Balls
  • Thursday: Enchiladas
  • Friday: Ham & Swiss Casserole
The bulk of the grocery shopping was car-snacks for the trip.

The car is already cleared out, and ready to go to the carwash tomorrow. It's been ages since I've had it vacuumed out; I've been running it through the express wash over the winter.

We're bringing a medium cooler, and so far two canvas bags of car snacks. Two laptops, two gameboys, two PDAs, a portable DVD player and a digital camera. I think that covers all the electronics.

Laundry's going quickly. Next time the dryer buzzes, I'll pick out handwash items that I want for the trip. After that load, I'll wash work towels. I'll wash the sweaters and shirts last, because both are micro-loads.

Flar hadn't called around to figure out where to buy long boards yet, so that's been pushed further back in the week. I took cleaning the bathroom out of this week altogether; I think the outside stuff needs priority, and then I'll be packing. I go nuts with packing, and prefer having days to get it done.
